Synopsis

Based on real events, Bronx, 1969. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams) is a neurologist who got a job in a psychiatric hospital. There he met several patients who appear to be catatonic, but Sayer feels that they are just "asleep" and that if they are treated the right way can be awakened. So research into the matter and come to the conclusion that L-DOPA, a drug that was already being used for patients with Parkinson's disease, the drug should be ideal for this case. However, to take the matter to the director, it permits only one patient is undergoing treatment. Just choose Sayer Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who for decades was "asleep". Lowe gradually recovers and this encourages Sayer in administering L-DOPA in the other patients under his supervision. Soon the patients show signs of improvement and also show up eager to catch up. But, unfortunately, Lowe begins to exhibit strange and dangerous side effects.
