In a future time a young man (Casper Van Dien), after graduating, either to enlist in the military to become a "citizen" and stop being a mere civilian. It does this because his girlfriend (Denise Richards), who is in love. A friend (Jake Busey) in common the couple enlists and is assigned to serve on the strategic planning. It is forwarded to fly battleships, but he will serve in the infantry, which is a less prestigious. However, it demonstrates that hard in training to become leader of a platoon, but because of a mistake of a colleague killed in a battle simulation. When he asks for waiver because his girlfriend is involved with his trainer, discovers that her hometown of Buenos Aires, no longer exists as a result of insect attack of the alien planet Klendathu. So he goes back on his decision to become part of the large ground offensive against these insects (which are huge and sometimes measuring 30 meters) on their planet. But the high ground command too underestimates the capacity of reaction of the enemy and die in a few hours more than 300 thousand land on the offensive. It is clear then that this war will declare the end of one kind and it is clear that an intelligent insect commands the actions that aim to exterminate the human race.
